In the Directory of Open Access Journals, you can search for open access, peer-reviewed journal articles in a wide range of academic subjects. Note that UDC Search includes resources from DOAJ.
This service covers free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals. It aims to cover all subjects and languages. Currently there are over 20,000 journals included.
Google Scholar is a great tool if used as one of many resources, not as a primary resource. Because it is such a huge database of materials, many of them out of print or in restricted collections, it can be the place to find unique and useful research material.
