OER Marketing Toolkit

The Purpose of Messaging

Marketing needs a message. Each time something is marketed, it needs to serve a purpose and have a goal to fulfill. That is where messaging comes in. When you market OER, make sure you have a succinct message to share. All your marketing should relate to this message. This will keep your marketing clear, coherent, and in line with your overall goals.

How to Message

The message of your marketing changes with your goals. In order to develop a clear message for your particular marketing campaign, consider the following questions:

  • What is your ultimate goal?
  • Who is your audience?
  • What are your audiences' concerns?
  • What are your audiences' needs?
  • How are you marketing? What platform/channel are you using? How many channels are you using?
  • How does your goal solve a problem or fill a gap?
  • What do I want my audience to learn/do?
  • What is the "voice" of message? Language used? Emotional tone?

Centering Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

One of the greatest assets to OER is the ability to adapt and remix the material. This helps center diversity, equity, and inclusion of teaching material. Hillary Miller Library has created a wonderful guide for conducting OER outreach around DEI. You can download the recommendations below.
