Black Studies is a rich area of interest. As it is interdisciplinary and historical, terminology has changed over time. As you research, you may want to vary the use of the following keywords to help you find material. In historical research, it is important to use the terms that were common in that era.

  • African (including specific countries)
  • African American
  • Afro-American
  • Black or Blacks
  • Coloreds or Colored or Colored Person
  • Negro or Negroes

All of these terms can use use with subterms to focus on a specific population. Suggested populations include:

  • Men or Male
  • Women or Female
  • Children (can include infants, youth, adolescents, teenagers)
  • People or Persons
