Harrington has had a prolific career writing about the D.C. music scene, first as editor for the alternative publications Woodwind and Unicorn Times and later as staff writer and music critic for the Washington Post.

Tuesday, February 18, 2025 • 12:30 p.m.

The award-winning recording artist, composer, producer, and educator Reginald Cyntje will perform with his ensemble and share his plans to record a new album next month. He has recorded seven albums as a leader, with Gentle Touch as his latest release. Cyntje is the Director of Jazz Studies at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts and a professor of music at Montgomery College. He is also an alumnus of the UDC Jazz Studies program and the University of Maryland, and has toured the US, Europe, South America, and the Caribbean.

Favorite pianist and UDC Jazz Studies Director Allyn Johnson invites saxophonist, composer/arranger and educator Tim Green for a lively session of conversation and performance. "Based in his native Baltimore, Green has garnered international acclaim while establishing himself as a pillar of his hometown scene. In 2018, he joined the faculty of the esteemed Peabody Conservatory, where he plays a vital role in the innovative Jazz Studies program."

Maurice Jackson: Rhythms of Resistance and Resilience - How Black Washingtonians Used Music and Sports in the Fight for Equality

Tuesday, April 1, 2025 • 6:00 p.m.

Author and historian Maurice Jackson leads a panel discussion on his recent Georgetown University Press publication with veteran jazz broadcaster Rusty Hassan and UDC Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Patricia Thomas.

In the Nation's Capital, music and sports have played a central role in the lives of African Americans, often serving as a barometer of social conflict and social progress.  Readers interested in the history of Washington, DC, the civil rights movement, racial justice, music, and sports will draw important lessons from these stories of the Black men and women who found in sports and music spaces to combat racial prejudice and bring people in the District of Columbia together.

A book signing will follow the presentation.

Calvin Jones BIG BAND Jazz Festival

Monday, April 28, 2025 • 8:00 p.m.

The BIG BAND sound returns as the powerhouse jazz ensembles from the University of the District of Columbia (directed by Allyn Johnson), Howard University (directed by Fred Irby III), and the University of Maryland (directed by Mark Williams) celebrate thirty-six years of world-class jazz and honor UDC Professor of Music, ret. Robert "Bobby" Felder for his many years of dedicated service to music education. Produced by the UDC Jazz Studies Program and the Felix E. Grant Jazz Archives, the festival began in 1987 as part of a city-wide tribute to Duke Ellington, and it remains one of the most anticipated events on Washington, DC's jazz calendar.
