    Top 5 Study Techniques

by Meghan Kowalski on 2024-12-04T08:00:00-05:00 | 0 Comments

Final exams are just around the corner, and it’s time to step up your study game. Having a few proven techniques in your toolkit can help you study more effectively, reduce stress, and retain more information. Here are five of our favorite strategies to help you make the most of your time and energy.

    1. Active Recall

Reading and reviewing your notes is great, but active recall helps you test your options. Try to recall what you've learned without relying on your notes. Test yourself with flash cards, quizzes, or explaining things out lout to a study buddy. Testing yourself strengthens memory and improves your ability to retrieve information later.

    2. Spaced Repetition

Practice makes perfect, right? Instead of cramming your studying into a night or two, start early and space things out. Practice a few times a day, then once a day, and then eventually a few days apart. Not only will this force you to start studying early, but you'll retain information better because you've seen it more than one.

    3. Pomodoro Technique

This classic time management technique can also work for your study sessions. Divide your study time into intervals - 25 minutes of focus followed by a 5 minute break. After four work sessions, take a 20 minute break. This technique reduces mental fatigue and helps you maintain focus.

    4. Ask "Why?"

Instead of just memorizing facts, delve into the reasons and connections behind the material you've learned. This can help you get a deeper understanding of the subject matter making it easier to recall later.

    5. Mind Mapping

This is a great option for visual learners. Draw diagrams and connect related ideas to help you see the bigger picture. Studies have shown that visualizing information helps it "stick" in our memories better making it easier to recall later.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to studying. Experiment with these techniques to discover what works best for you. Remember, the library is here to support you—whether you need a quiet study space, access to resources, or personalized assistance.

Good luck with your finals! You’ve got this - and we’re here to help every step of the way.
