    Build Your College Skills

by Meghan Kowalski on 2019-09-09T09:00:00-04:00 | 0 Comments

The beginning of the semester is the best time to develop the skills you need to ace this semester.

    • Time Management: Time management is critical to attending classes, completing your assignments, and getting to enjoy college. You want to understand just how much time you have to do everything. It's about balance and setting priorities. And, remember, it's okay to say, "No."

    • Study Techniques: Studying is more than cramming; there are skills involved. You can survey your reading by skimming chapter headings and summaries. Then you can take notes and highlight as you read to reinforce important information. Recite the main points of your work out loud. This makes the information easier to remember. Even doodling in the margins of your notes can help you recall the information.

    • Critical Thinking: A fun part about college is that you get to move beyond memorization. Critical thinking means asking questions about your learning to develop a deeper understanding of the subject matter. This leads to complex problem solving which helps you discover new information and synthesize your knowledge. This is a skill you can use for the rest of your life.

    • Self-Care: No one can be productive all the time. An important part of being successful is knowing when to take care of yourself. Build in at least a few minutes each day or a few hours each week to focus on yourself. Try exercising, completing an activity you love, or spoil yourself with an at-home spa session. Whatever you do, choose something that makes you happy and is unrelated to work. Occasional indulgence is a good thing.

    • Resiliency: College is not easy. You'll have good days and bad days. When you have a bad day, it's important to remember that you can bounce back. Look at your strengths and use those. Build positive relationships that encourage growth and support. Always remember your goals and take steps, even little ones, to achieve them. As Dory would say, "Just keep swimming." And remember, it’s okay to ask for help. You have access to the Counseling and Wellness Center and all of their resources.
